Barbarzyńcy w Vita Epifani Ennodiusza z Pawii
    (Wydawnictwo KUL, 2019) Skibiński, Tomasz
The article presents the image and the place of barbarians in the late-Roman society in the light of Vita Epifani by Ennodius (Magnus Felix Ennodius). The analysis of the work shows the world of the second half of the 5th century, co-created by Romans and the barbarians, in which the latter have their inalienable place. They are no longer guests and newcomers, but co-hosts and co-creators of the new community of the late antiquity. The image of individual barbarian groups is diverse: there are real partners of the Romans, concerned for the common good and supported by Roman advisors (eg Goths, Burgundians), but beside them are primitive, cruel and brutal Rugii, presented according to the stereotypical image of barbarism. All of them, however, are transformed under the influence of Epiphanius. Only occasionally, Ennodius indicates the difficulties in roman-barbaric integration resulting from difference of religion. Considering these qualities, Ennodius’ work appears as a call to the Roman clergy and aristocracy to work together with the new peoples present in the former Roman territories, and with their rulers.

„Czyż i Afryka nie jest pełna ciał świętych męczenników?” (Augustyn, Ep. 78, 3). Męczeństwo jako rys duchowości Afryki Północnej
    (Wydawnictwo KUL, 2019) Wysocki, Marcin
Certainly one of the greatest phenomena of Christianity are the masses of martyrs who gave and still give their lives for Christ. In particular, martyrdom’s spirituality was characteristic of the first centuries of Christianity, and Roman Africa was undoubtedly the region that exceled in the number of martyrs, in the number of known acts of martyrdom and encouragements for martyrdom. In this article, based on existing ancient testimonies from the writings of Tertullian, Cyprian, the acts of the martyrs, Augustine, Arnobius and Lactantius, martyrdom is shown as one of the main features of North African spirituality.

Symbolika eklezjalna Jerozolimy a polemika antydonatystyczna w Afryce Rzymskiej
    (Wydawnictwo KUL, 2019) Paczkowski, Mieczysław
The present article analyses to which extent the African authors had got used of the image of Jerusalem in the period of their polemic with the Donatists. It is well known that one of the focal points of the Donatist controversy concerned ecclesiology. There is a great number of Church’s images occurring in the works of Christian authors, but it seems that a symbol of Jerusalem is however predominant. The city of God, an image of the Church, revealed itself as an earthly and celestial reality, including both the historical sphere and transcendence. Already in the process of forming ecclesiology in Nord Africa had a particular physiognomy with elements assimilated and altered by the Donatist sect. The reflections of Tyconius and Optatus of Milevi took on considerable significance and stood at the origin of catholic’s inspiration and argumentation. St. Augustine of Hippo placed the conflict with the Donatists not only on the practical and disciplinary context but above all on the doctrinal level. His ecclesiology proved to be coherent and compact. The bishop of Hippo found his basis on the biblical level and the traditional doctrine. In the anti-Donatist literature, it can be observed a certain predilection for a particular set of scriptural quotations used by various authors as an argument and as an illustration to support the thought concerning the universality of the Church. The topic of Jerusalem played here the crucial role.

The Chronology of Augustine’s "Tractatus in Iohannis Evangelium" 1–16 and "Enarrationes in Psalmos" 119–133 Revisited
(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2019) Andoková, Marcela; Horka, Robert
In the year 2002 Milewski published an article devoted to the current state of research concerning Augustine’s Commentary on the Gospel of John where, among other topics, he reports on the state of research in the chronology of this work by Augustine, and after a brief summary of the latest solutions proposed by prominent Augustinian scholars he concludes that the history of the Tractates’ composition calls for a careful appreciation of their development and appearance over the course of Augustine’s busy episcopate and in relation to his other pastoral endeavours. This study therefore serves as the point of departure for our present article in which we would like to contribute to the recently proposed solution to certain questions related to the chronology of the two series of Augustine’s homilies, i.e. Tractatus in Iohannis Evangelium 1-16 and Enarrationes in Psalmos 119-133, especially in those points where the present solutions appear to be rather vague. Hence, our analysis concerns primarily the division of Tractates 1-12 and 13-16 made by Le Landais, and consequently accepted by all later scholars. Moreover, it focuses on some key points of the chronology: the dating of Tractate 7 at a pagan festival, the so-called dies sanguinis, proposed by La Bonnardière, then the synchronization of Tractates 1-16 with the parallel series of Enarrationes in Psalmos 119-133, and, finally, the re-evaluation of the year of the delivery of both series of homilies, dated between the years 406/407 or 407/408. Our argumentation is based, first and foremost, on the principle similar topic means similar liturgical time thanks to which we can place Tractates 10-12 of the Commentary on John’s Gospel right before the beginning of the Lenten season. Consequently, it enables us to include Tractates 13-16 in Augustine’s preaching activity during the Lenten season until as late as the beginning of the Easter Octave. In addition, if we admit that Tractate 7 was not delivered on the so-called dies sanguinis feast related to the rites of Cybele and Attis but on the occassion of another unknown local festival of an aitiological myth in Hippo Regius, we do not need to place it on the 24th of March as La Bonnardière did. Finally, these findings help us outline the new synchronized chronology of the two series of Augustine’s exegetical homilies for both the years 406/407 and 407/408.

La Vita S. Pauli Monachi Thebaei di san Girolamo contenuta nel codice manoscritto Vaticanus Latinus 13008
    (Wydawnictwo KUL, 2019) Degórski, Bazyli
The essay analyzes the text of the Vita S. Pauli Monachi Thebaei of St. Jerome contained in the Manuscript Code Vaticanus Latinus 13008, kept in the Apostolic Vatican Library. In particular, are indicated and highlighted all variations of the Manuscript differing from the text of the critical edition of this work by St. Jerome (see B. Degórski, Edizione critica della “Vita Sancti Pauli Primi Eremitae” di Girolamo, Institutum Patristicum “Augustinianum”, Roma 1987).

Cyprian u Tymoteusza. Odwołania do decyzji synodalnych Cypriana z Kartaginy w polemice w Kościele Orientalnym w VIII wieku
