    Biblical Scholarship of Franciscus Titelmans

    The dissertation is devoted to the biblical works of Franciscus Titelmans, a 16th-century Franciscan theologian from Leuven. Older historiography viewed him as a conservative scholastic, opposed to humanism. However, an analysis of his biblical commentaries shows that the reality was much more complex. The first chapter shows that pre-modem exegesis was based on two pillars: the balance between the literal and spiritual senses and the ecclesial dimension of exegesis. This exegetical consensus persisted throughout the Middle Ages but was challenged during the Renaissance. The second chapter presents the life and works of Titelmans. He received a mixture of scholastic and humanistic education and himself was in many respects a humanist. The third chapter examines how he explained the literal sense of Scriptures. The next chapter focuses on the mystical sense of the Bible in Titelmans' exegesis. The last, fifth chapter evaluates his polemics with Erasmus and other humanists. It shows that he was not per se an opponent of the humanistic methodology. Rather, he feared what he saw as the secularisation of God's Word. Titelmans was scandalized by the humanistic concept of treating the Holy Scripture as if it were merely a text that opened its hidden treasures to an experienced philologist. We argue that the debates of the early sixteenth century, in which Titelmans took an active part, mark the beginning of changes in the understanding of the Bible that continue to pose difficulties for biblical theologians to this day. Starsza historiografia postrzegała go jako konserwatywnego scholastyka, przeciwnego humanizmowi. Analiza jego komentarzy biblijnych pokazuje jednak, że rzeczywistość była znacznie bardziej złożona. W pierwszym rozdziale ukazano, że przednowoczesna egzegeza opierała się na dwóch filarach: równowadze między dosłownym i duchowym znaczeniem oraz eklezjalnym wymiarze egzegezy. Ten egzegetyczny konsensus utrzymywał się przez całe średniowiecze, ale został zakwestionowany w dobie renesansu. Rozdział drugi przedstawia życie i twórczość Titelmansa. Otrzymał mieszankę edukacji scholastycznej i humanistycznej i pod wieloma względami sam był humanistą. W trzecim rozdziale przeanalizowano, w jaki sposób wyjaśniał dosłowny sens Pisma Świętego. Kolejny rozdział koncentruje się na mistycznym sensie Biblii w egzegezie Titelmansa. Ostatni, piąty rozdział ocenia jego polemikę z Erazmem i innymi humanistami. Ukazuje, że nie był on per se przeciwnikiem metodologii humanistycznej. Raczej, obawiał się tego, co postrzegał jako sekularyzację Słowa Bożego. Titelmans był zgorszony humanistyczną koncepcją traktowania Pisma Świętego tak, jak gdyby było ono jedynie tekstem, który otwiera swe ukryte skarby wobec wytrawnego filologa. Twierdzimy, że debaty z początku XVI wieku, w których Titelmans brał czynny udział, wyznaczają początek przemian w rozumieniu Biblii, które do dziś stanowią trudność dla teologów biblijnych.

    Migracje Słowa Bożego, czyli obrona wartości Wulgaty według Franciszka Titelmansa

    Nowe tłumaczenie Nowego Testamentu, dokonane bezpośrednio z greki, zostało opublikowane przez Erazma z Rotterdamu w 1516 r. stając się ważnym punktem odniesienia dla badań nad tekstem Biblii. Dzieło Erazma zdawało się podważać dotychczasowe tłumaczenie, Wulgatę, i wywołało wiele polemik. Jednym z krytyków Erazma był młody franciszkanin z Lovanium, Franciszek Titelmans. W swoim Prologus Apologeticus zarzucał on Erazmowi motywowane pychą poszukiwanie próżnej chwały i bronił autorytetu obowiązującej od stuleci Wulgaty. Sednem jego argumentacji było przeświadczenie o migracjach Słowa Bożego. Objawienie przenosiło się z języka do języka pod ścisłym nadzorem Boskiej Opatrzności, co gwarantowało wierność przekazu. Tym samym, kwestia tłumaczenia nie była li tylko sprawą filologii, lecz wymagała natchnienia Bożego. Argumentacja Titelmansa znalazła częściowe odzwierciedlenie w dekretach Soboru Trydenckiego poświęconych Biblii. Co prawda szczegóły jego wywodu zupełnie nie przystają do stanu współczesnych badań nad Biblią, to jednak pewne ogólne założenia obecne w jego polemice z Erazmem są zaskakująco bliskie bieżącym debatom, czyniąc ową kontrowersję sprzed blisko pięciuset lat ważnym zagadnieniem badawczym.

    Translating Romans 5:12 in the early 16th century. Franciscus Titelmans’s polemic against humanists

    Translating the Bible has never been an easy task, least of all at the times of theological controversy. A New Latin translation by Erasmus of Rotterdam, executed on the eve of the Reformation, met much criticism on philological and theological level. Franciscus Titelmans, a young, Franciscan scholar from Leuven, addressed in his Collationes quinque numerous issued regarding the translation of the Epistle to the Romans. This article focuses on Romans 5:12. Titelmans claimed that Erasmus’s translation of this verse threatened the dogma of original sin and promoted the resurgence of Pelagianism. The article analyses his arguments showing that although he was not entirely alien to philology, he relied more on the Church Fathers and the authority of the Church in his translation. Philological and logical arguments served only as auxiliary proofs for the meaning that had been established by patristic commentaries. Consequently, this debate mirrors diverse attitudes of both scholars. The Humanist opted for sound philology, even if it resulted in questionable theological statements, the Franciscan for sound theology, even if it led to imperfect philological choices. Although specific arguments of this debate are outdated and hardly relevant to modern-day biblical studies, divergent attitudes of its protagonists are well reflected in current debates, making it worth
