    On Some Anthropological Foundations of Spirituality

    Taking into account today’s progression towards a better notion of spirituality, the development of universal anthropological foundations is of vital importance. They can be found in the classical metaphysical understanding of the human mind. From a practical point of view, spirituality expresses itself in the way people think and behave. To better understand the anthropological foundations of spirituality, we will begin by examining two ways of discovering reality: intuition of being and intuition of good. Looking at these intuitions will give us a better understanding of the issues pertaining to spirituality with its self-transcending dynamism.

    Recent Developments in Understanding Spirituality as Exemplified by the Concept of Self-Transcendence

    The recent history of science has witnessed many shifts of paradigms. One of the major changes has been observed in the shift of spirituality, transforming from a traditional faith-based notion to a more secular or postmodern one. These changes are confusing for many modern people, as they are not able to follow these rapid developments. This article is an attempt at providing a conceptual framework to understand the changes that the notion of spirituality has undergone using the concept of self-transcendence and its two major dimensions: vertical and horizontal. This model will serve to evaluate different ways of defining spirituality in both theology and the social sciences, and to indicate the provenience of their roots in both disciplines. In conclusion, self-transcendence will be compared with the concept of self-actualization.

    The Self as the Spiritual Subject. An Overview of Selected Concepts in View of the Positivist Paradigm

    The main predicament presented in this article lies in the complexity found in the internal structure of the human being when one searches for key elements that define its essence and uniqueness. The overview begins with empirical research as exemplified in psychology, continues in presenting chosen theories in modern philosophy, with an accent on the phenomenological method, and subsequently puts forward the synthesis of them both in psychotherapy. The last part is dedicated to theology as a distinct way to uncover what the essence of being human is, as based on divine Revelation; the latter is the only one of the presented sciences to be explicitly aware of the source of the mystery at the basis of being human. This article attempts to compare the research end results of chosen approaches by demonstrating their relationship to the most hidden aspects of being human. The analysis is organized around the concept of recognizing and accepting the place of mystery in the understanding of what are the most essential elements in the human being. As a result, psychology is conceptualized as a science that does not allow mystery; theology, however, is found to underline the presence of mystery in relationship to our divine origins.
